Project Description:

The South Georgia Museum is the key to visitors' understanding and enjoyment of the island. Originally set up as a whaling museum in 1992, it has diversified to illustrate South Georgia's history and natural history, as well as items of current interest. The 1916 Grytviken "Villa," housing the museum, was originally the whaling station manager's house, built by Norwegians. Exhibits include discovery, exploration, Shackleton, surveying and mountaineering expeditions, sealing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the first decade of whaling, techniques of modern whaling in the middle part of the 20th century, whalers' social life, maritime history, and natural history. Save for remnants of the old whaling stations, the island is virtually unspoiled by man, offering unique opportunities to observe huge numbers of seabirds and marine mammals along the island's tussac-fringed shores and the scenery of the most beautiful part of the Southern Ocean.
